Duct Tape is my Friend
So a few months ago I hear scratching in the walls of my place. I knew exactly what this was because when I was a child living in Riverside, the armpit of the world, we had rats one summer. We set poison and traps and then they died leaving us with their stench in the walls of our house. Finally my parents called the exterminators who took out the dead rats and fumigated for the smell. This time around, the owners set traps and mostly likely poison (stupid) and the rats died ---- in my walls. The stench was unbearable about 2 weeks ago but it's subsided.
Friday night there were about 8 flies in my place. With my handy rolled up magazine, I killed them all, but then, more flies. In all told, I killed 27 flies Friday night. Saturday morning, there was even more! I felt like I should be finding some chopsticks a la Karate Kid style.
Saturday night, while walking through my hallway, I heard a buzzing and looked up to see my hallway lamp filled with buzzing flies. At least 50 buzzing around and another 10-20 dead on the bottom. Yes, there was a huge freak out on my part. I didn't know what to do and thought about spraying with raid and then thought that I didn't want to smell that either.
Duct tape is my friend. Armed with a fresh roll, I taped up the lamp, the crack between lamp and ceiling, smoke dector, mirror in bathroom that often has termites escaping out and anything else I could find that even remotely had an opening to the walls.
By Sunday night, the rain and cold came. Monday morning when someone came to look at my Lord of the Flies, there was 40+ dead flies and no flying ones in the lamp. Gross is not adequate. YEESH. YUCK. DISGUSTING... there's more but you get it.
The plan is to cut the ceiling out and fumigate and then replace the lamp/ceiling back.
This is not Ethiopia but it felt like it and I've been there.
All told, I killed 62 flies this weekend. Not my idea of fun in the city.
